In the early 1960s, the Soviet Union’s sole airline, Aeroflot, required a long-range jet airliner to service their international routes. During this period, the acquisition of western equipment was not an option, so an original design was going to be required. The initial design was comparable to the UKs Super VC-10 airliner that featured four rear mounted engines, a T-tail, and six abreast seating that accommodated up to 186 passengers in mixed class configuration.

Although the IL-62 first flew in early 1963, a subsequently improved version featuring turbo-fan engines did not enter the market until March 1967. While the IL-62 served the Soviet Union well, in comparison to the western type aircraft that were in service (707, DC-8 and VC-10), the IL-62 was technologically inferior and simply did not perform as well as its competitors. However, in the early 1970s, a newly revised version of the IL-62, renamed the IL-62M, came to market. Unfortunately, by this time, the western world had also made advancements with their newer aircraft, leaving the IL-62M in its wake.

Production of the IL-62M aircraft finally ended in 1990, with a combined total of only 244 IL-62 and IL-62M aircraft having been manufactured. Outside of the Soviet Union, the IL-62 series had some moderate success operating in eastern-bloc European nations and countries with allegiance to the former Russian Federation.

Today, in the twilight of its career, the IL-62M is still being flown in limited numbers in the Russian Federation, surrounding countries, third-world nations and Cuba.
