Having been developed by Airbus in 1990 as a competitor to the Boeing 747, which had gone unchallenged since its inception in the 1960’s, the Airbus A380 is a four-engine jet that went into service in 2007 as the world’s largest, long-range, wide-body passenger airliner, and is the only full-length, double-decker aircraft to ever be produced. While the A380 offers seating for up to 555 passengers in a standard three-class configuration, in a full economy-class configuration, the A380 can accommodate as many as 853 passengers.

Despite its enormous size, the Airbus A380 has a conventional airliner design with a cylindrical fuselage that is only slightly wider than that of the Boeing 747. In addition, the overall footprint of the A380 enables it to be compatible with most existing ramps and runways at major airports.
