During the late 1960's Boeing stretched the 727-100 by 20-feet and designated it as the Boeing 727-200. During the 1970's, Boeing added improvements to the 727-200, which included more powerful engines, giving the 727 expanded capabilities. This version was called the Boeing 727-200 Advanced. The Boeing 727 was discontinued in 1984 with 1831 units having been manufactured. The 727 was the most popular jet airliner until the Boeing 737 eventually eclipsed its production numbers. Despite being out of production for many decades, many 727's are still flying today, including versions that have been re-engined with new powerplants, enabling them to fly for years to come.
